Was at the cinema tonight and ended up watching Vantage Point, mainly on the strength of Forest Whitaker taking one of the leading roles having seen him in the Last King of Scotland, which by the way is another film I would recommend seeing.
As the title says on the whole the film was good, the storyline was easy to follow and the plot wasn’t complex which would have made it difficult to watch with the point of view changing so often. From the groans it was clear to tell that some people didn’t like the fact it was really only a 23 minute long film, however the plot added crucial details each time and was done very well. A couple of the shots were repeated from the different perspective and some may say this lacks development of the story I thought it highlighted the point of the film well, and I happened to notice different things each time.
It was about a political issue, although it didn’t take this as the focus and instead of choosing to make this out as a good versus evil and terrorism is wrong story it merely used this to convey to the audience what I thought the main theme. In my view this was how different views of an incident can give completely differing opinions on what has happened and to make sure you always look twice. There are a few twists and this keeps the themes fresh and interesting and helps to get across this point while also benefiting the overall view of the film.
However there is a negative, although I doubt it would put me off watching the film again. There are a few shots which make the film look poorly shot, like in the main car chase it can be clearly seen that he crashes the car numerous times without this damaging the car, obviously they used multiple vehicles for it and it just makes it look slightly amateurish. Also a scene in which Forest Whitaker is supposed to be running looks comical as he happens to amble across the screen. It is a shame a production with such a large budget could fail to notice these points and even though these are only small parts and you may feel I am being overly critical, I believe this is the difference in my eyes of it being a good film rather than a great one.
Even if you don’t particularly like Action style films I would still give it a watch just for the storyline and the interesting viewpoints it has. Overall it has been slated by the Critics but I would seriously consider this one of the best films I have seen in a while, probably meaning I am actually the only one who likes it.
